Martinelli wiretapping case will continue Supreme Court

PANAMA’S SUPREME COURT has ruled that the criminal process against former president, Ricardo Martinelli over interception of communications to more than 150 businessmen, union leaders, journalists, politicians and opponents of the previous government will proceed.

The judges met to discuss the petition presented by the lawyer Sidney Sitton, who argues that Martinelli has electoral criminal jurisdiction, as the Democratic Change Party 9 (CD), which his client founded and chairs has called primaries thus giving him immunity.
However, the Electoral Tribunal (TE) recalled that still the election regulation is not final, since it has not reached the stage for the admission of challenges.. The
TE judges endorsed the rules and timing of CD elections which will be held on 25 October-through Resolution No. 52 of June 2..
