Panama Combats Illegal Fishing

Panama has made significant progress in marine sustainability and the protection of its fishing resources, among which stands out the implementation of a satellite fishing monitoring center that supervises both the national fleet and foreign vessels, ensuring compliance with fishing regulations.

The general administrator of the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP), Hamed Tuñón, announced the renewal of a partnership with Global Fishing Watch.  This strategic collaboration uses advanced technology to monitor and combat illegal fishing, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices and the conservation of its marine ecosystems.

In addition, Panama has been recognized by the United States with inclusion in the North American Program against Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU-2022-2026). This distinction is a testament to Panama’s leadership in promoting responsible fishing practices and protecting its marine resources.  Tuñón highlighted that Panama is responding to current market demands to ensure responsible practices and sustainable fishing.  Panama is implementing stricter and more effective measures to combat illegal fishing, aligning with international standards.
