Thousands march for Scottish independence, against Brexit

SCORES of thousands of people participated Saturday, October 6 in a massive march in Edinburgh in favor of Scotland’s independence from the United Kingdom and opposition to Brexit.

It is the latest in a series of demonstrations organized by the pro-independence organization in various Scottish cities throughout the year.

Chanting slogan like  “Marching for independence” and in a jovial atmosphere with bagpipes and attendees left from the start of the iconic Royal Mile to  Holyrood Park, located next to the Scottish Parliament.

In a sea of Scottish flags and a large number of “esteladas”, representing the independence movement of the Spanish region of Catalonia, the protesters toured the main streets roads of the Scottish capital.

In addition to chants like such as “Out the Conservatives” and “What do we want? Independence, When do we want it? Now,” banners read:  “Let’s finish with the mandate of London” or “We do not belong to London.”

In September 2014, Scotland held a referendum in which 55% of voters opted to remain in the UK, compared to 45% who supported the separation.

After the narrow victory of “Brexit” in the British referendum of 2016, in which Scotland voted overwhelmingly (62%) in favor of remaining in the European Union, Scottish principal minister, Nicola Sturgeon spoke of convening a second consultation on independence.
