3 km ash plume at Costa Rica volcano

COLUMNS of ash from the Turrialba volcano, in  Costa Rica rose three kilometers into the sky on Friday May 20.

The volcano is just 30 kilometers  from the capital San Jose. There had been three minor eruptions on Thursday.

“I think it is the strongest eruption of the last six years,” said volcano expert Gino González.

A sulfur smell could be detected in San Jose and surrounding towns, while the fine particles limited visibility and covered vehicles.

Emergency measures are in  place, including possible flight cancelations,
