Windfarm helps out as hydropower falls
THE WIND farm in Penonomé is partially offsetting the decrease in hydroelectric production brought on by of lack of rain due to the El Niño phenomenon.
During the rainy season, hydro plants provide up to 65 percent of the country’s energy, which is 1,600 megawatts at peak demand.
The use of renewable energy is in line with energy policies plan promoted by the current government to rely less on fossil fuels. But wind and hydro is expected to provide less than 25 percent of the country’s energy supply in the coming months.
The government is now focused on improving the infrastructure to allow more clean energy projects to provide power to the national grid, reports La Prensa.
