Pop star’s cheapie Panama performance
PANAMA’S General Directorate of Revenue (DGI) is investigating a possible tax scam in concerts by six Spanish artists between 2011 and 2014 whose contracts were dramatically below the going rate.
The artists involved are Enrique and Julio Iglesias, Alejandro Sanz, Raphael, Jarabe de Palo and La Oreja de Van Gogh.
According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, the DGI has requested the assistance of Spanish authorities under a tax treaty signed between the two countries.
The investigation is focused on whether or not the payment amounts listed in the contracts matched the amounts that were actually paid to the performers.
In the case of Enrique Iglesias, his contract states he was to be paid $90,000, but the actual amount is thought to be much higher. His father, Julio, was paid $22,000 and Raphael was paid $15,000.
Additionally, Alejandro Sanz was paid $30,000 and La Oreja de Van Gogh was paid $2,500.
