Outrage at attacks on Electoral Tribunal

PANAMA’S Chamber of Commerce says it is "outraged" by the tone of the current political campaign and attacks against the Electoral Tribunal (TE), and warnings possible fraud.

In a statement, the organization urged the country to "maintain confidence in the transparency of our democracy."

Electoral Tribunal Judge Erasmo Pinilla has warned of the risks involved in attacks against the TE.
There have been numerous moves to discredit the institution, including attacks by President Martinelli on the operators of the voting system, and a move by a former chauffer challenging Pinilla’s legal credentials.
On Wednesday, prosecutors said that on November 20, 2013 the Attorney General, Ana Belfon, Pinilla visited Pinilla’s office to notify him of a criminal complaint against him.
The seemingly orchestrated campaign has drawn increasing criticism from the business section, civil groups, and politicians.
