PRD mayoralty candidate has 14 point lead
UNLESS the CD can come up with another scandal, like the one that derailed the PRD candidate in 2009, the mayor’s office at Panama City Hall will have a new resident in July, according to the latest poll.
José Luis Fabrega , the current PRD candidate with 38% saying they would vote for him, is shown with a virtually insurmountable 14 point lead over CD incumbent Roxana Mendez.
in 2009 , a month before the elections , the PRD candidate for mayor of Panama mark also had a commanding lead in n surveys of voting intentions but then an apparently orchestrated corruption scandal involving David Murcia Guzman ( since sentenced to 32 years in jail in Colombia, on various charges, including a pyramid fraud, and also serving a sentence in the US for money laundering. No evidence was produced of alleged payments by Murcia to the PRD, but after the election a check to the CD surfaced. But by then, the way had been cleared for Bosco Vallarino to take office. He had been trailing by 10 points.
Vallarino, who stumbled from the start, and blundered on until edged out by President Ricardo Martinelli and is now facing criminal charges. Martinelli insider Mendez took over.
The actors have changed and Fabrega is now appearing as the favorite with 38 % acceptance according to an Ipsos poll for FOX Report and La Estrella de Panama. with simulation and using ballot vote .
Unless the story of 2009 is repeated and a similar event occurring in the last weeks of the campaign Fabrega would be the clear winner. Mendez has only 24% support according to the face to face poll of some 623 residents in Panama City.
Panameñista Party candidate, Jose Isabel Blandon, remains in third place with an acceptance of 23%.
The survey, was taken March 26-29 with a margin of error of ± 3.91.
