Increased jail term for brothers riles judge

An increased jail sentence for two brothers involved in a major bankruptcy scandal, has triggered some strong comments between two Supreme Court judges.

The Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, on Aug. 10, increased a previous four year prison sentence to 66 months for the brothers Carlos and Aquilino De La Guardia for the bankruptcy of the Adelag group.

The decision fired up differences between judges Harry Diaz and Aníbal Salas, who was the rapporteur of the case.
The decision was endorsed by Alejandro Moncada Luna, but Salas held back his vote saying that "serious irregularities" occured in the process.
Salas in his dissenting opinion that Diaz issued a decision without having the full facts.
Meanwhile, in a letter to Chambers, Diaz described the remarks as "disrespectful" and said that in his approach there was nothing irregular.
"I think you owe an explanation to justice and the country concerning the intriguing passion for the lords Carlos and Aquilino De La Guardia, to be declared innocent” says the letter.
