No to Lies judgment condemned
‘The New York Times, one of the world's most influential newspapers, said Thursday, that the government of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, has carried out "cynical hijacking of the Ecuadorian judicial system."
The comments follow a judgment against the Ecuadorian journalist Carlos Perez Barriga, a harsh critic of Correa’s management. Barriga has been holed up in the Panamanian embassy in Quito for a week.
Perez Barriga, director of the newspaper El Universo, hopes that the Government of Ecuador will grant him the safe conduct arranged for him this week by the Panamanian Foreign Ministry so he can leave the country.
On Thursday, La Prensa, and papers across the American continent. published the article "No to lies" whose original publication led to the prosecution of the journalist and two others, earning them a three year jail sentence and a $40 million fine. The sentencing has been condemned around the world.
