Panama financial services review due Nov 21

President Juan Carlos Varela  has pledged to reveal the findings of  a report on the country’s financial services industry on Monday, November 21.

“I am going to receive it tomorrow [Saturday] and review it over the weekend,”  Varela said on Friday.

The report was prepared by a committee of independent experts who reviewed the practices of the financial industry.

The committee was formed in April in response to the “Panama Papers” investigation coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

Theinvestigation was based on files that were leaked from Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca whose principals were advisors to Varela and the government.

The committee’s work was interrupted in August when two members, Nobel  economic Laureate Joseph Stiglitz and Swiss anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth, resigned over concerns about transparency.

The pair quit the committee over concerns the report would not be released to the public before vetting.

Varela said that the two experts had the right to express their opinions and thanked them for being a part of the committee for a few months.
