OPINION: The fragility of Panama democracy

The current situation of Panamanian justice requires courageous and committed action by the President of the Republic, since in his mandate - which extends until 2024 - he may appoint six chief magistrates and nine alternates of the Supreme Court of Justice. Now, he will also appoint an Attorney General of the Nation.

The president does not have any of the obstacles that his predecessors had. The current president clearly understands the damage that the impunity of the great corruption has done to Panama. The hundreds and perhaps billions of dollars lost, wasted and stolen in public contracts would have been schools and medicines for all Panamanians. These well-used resources would prevent the death of children due to hunger and contaminated water. The fragility of democracy and social inequality can begin to be corrected with good justice. That option is in your hands, Mr. President – LA PRENSA, Nov 14
