OPINION: Electoral impunity thrives

In a town located in the mountains of Capira, the true face of Creole politicking was revealed to us. The courageous action of a team of independent journalists fromClaramente showed that the old ways of patronage are strong, even if they are more hidden.

It is unjustifiable to prevent or attempt to impede citizens the right to free transit and the exercise of freedom of information, which includes the right to seek and verify facts of newsworthy value. As if that were not enough, these citizens were attacked and persecuted by a mob of activists clearly identified as part of the campaign team of deputy Yanibel Ábrego.

And to add salt to the wound, the deputy issued a statement in which she neither apologizes nor acknowledges errors in the actions of her campaign team; and next to the lukewarm declaration of the Electoral Tribunal, in which they remit to third parties the jurisdictional responsibility of this incident, it makes clear to Panamanians.us the panorama of Panamanians of the impunity that we must face.
