Panama ‘s  National Assembly approved on Monday, October 7 in third debate a bill that decrees September 7 as the “Civic and Commemoration Day of the signing of the  Torrijos-Carter Treaties ”.

According to the approved document, the Panama Canal Authority, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture will guarantee the organization of allusive events, and state and private schools and state institutions that day will develop cultural activities to highlight the historic event.,

The Torrijos-Carter Treaties were signed on September 7, 1977, in Washington by the then US President Jimmy Carter and by Panama’s Head of State, Omar Torrijos.

They allowed the Panama Canal operation to pass into Panamanian hands.
