Repairs to The Bridge of Americas will have to Wait for the Fourth Bridge.
The Bridge of the Americas handles the passage of approximately 60,000 vehicles daily, according to the Ministry of Public Works. The Ministry of Public Works is preparing a three-stage intervention and acknowledges that the concrete road surface has already exceeded its useful life.
The complete repair of the Bridge of the Americas will have to wait until the Fourth Bridge is operational, due to the impact that closing or significantly restricting a roadway used by approximately 60,000 vehicles daily would have. The Minister of Public Works, José Luis Andrade, explained that the bridge’s structure remains sound and that, for now, no problem is anticipated that would compromise its operation. However, he acknowledged that the concrete road surface has exceeded its lifespan and requires extensive repairs. While that intervention is pending, the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) states that it will continue with maintenance work. The most recent incident occurred on April 6, when a fire forced the bridge to close from approximately 5:00 pm until 3:00 pm the following day. The closure caused significant traffic disruptions in the capital city.

Three Stages of Intervention.
The repair program was divided into three stages. The first phase involves cleaning, protecting, and painting the areas affected by the April 6th fire pictured below. The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) reported that this phase is about to be put out to tender and that the call for bids could be issued in the coming weeks. The work includes pressure washing of the affected elements, followed by their protection and painting, through coordinated procedures, said Edwin Lewis, National Director of Studies and Designs at the MOP.
He emphasized that the second stage includes reinforcement work on elements affected by the heat, including the placement of carbon fabrics in areas near the site of the fire. For the third phase, the MOP expects to receive a consultancy report from the Panama Canal Authority that will determine the interventions that the bridge will need to receive starting in 2028-2029. These works include the complete repair of the track bed, with the aim of extending the useful life of the track.
The fire in the Bridge of the Americas area occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026, at approximately 4:00 pm, when a tanker truck exploded and caught fire near one of the bridge’s pillars.
Lawsuit For $3.2 Million.
As a result of the fire, a criminal complaint was also filed against the company Panama Oil Terminals, SA (POTSA), for the alleged crime against economic assets, for an amount of $3,261,572.93. The complaint was filed on September 16, 2026, with the Circuit Prosecutor’s Office of the Specialized Section for Homicides and Femicides of the metropolitan area and is in the admission stage. The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) maintains the ban on trucks crossing the Bridge of the Americas, a restriction that has been in place for approximately 15 years. The agency noted that it is currently being enforced more rigorously and that sanctions have even been imposed on vehicles that have attempted to violate it. Large trucks and buses must use the Centennial Bridge.
