Business leaders voice concern on Assembly constitution debate
The National Assembly received a consensus document from the Constitution National Development Council.” for discussion, not to dismember it and introduce surprising elements,” said Panama’s Chamber of Commerce (Cciap) on Sunday October 27.
The country follows with special attention the treatment given by the Assembly to the package of constitutional reforms formulated by the Council and the Chamber recognizes the “legitimacy of the Council as a space for dialogue as well as, its wide representation, with 23 distinctive organizations ” says a press statement.
The Cciap said that President Laurentino Cortizo completed the text of the reforms to the Legislature, hoping that “its members agreed that its content includes and encompasses the changes in the constitutional order to which the country immediately
The Chamber expects the deputies to complete the discussion in the remaining days of the current session and, during the next one, “on the basis of what is approved in this legislature can improve the document and eliminate what does not make sense depending on what society demands ”.
“We are talking about the Political Constitution of the Republic, the social contract of all Panamanians, the framework of national life. So this issue should be addressed with the seriousness and responsibility it deserves, not as a mere procedure, ”said the Chamber.
