Fungus That Threatens Banana Plantations: Bocas del Toro is in Preparation

The Agricultural Insurance Institute (ISA) participated in the simulation on the management of Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (Foc R4T) fungus, in the community of Guabito, province of Bocas del Toro, organized by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA), as a preventive measure and action plan in case this pest is detected in Panamanian territory. 

Within this simulation, the task of addressing a case of Fusarium Race 4 (Foc R4T) was carried out, which included the evaluation of its components and diagnosis of the pathogen, which attacks the roots of the banana plant until it produces damage to its vascular system and causes it to wilt.  Participants adhered to the protocol for the use of biosafety clothing because this fungus spreads through infected plant material, contaminated soil particles, shoes, clothing, vehicles, and even animals. 

The field trial also addressed the importance of applying quarantine controls on farms for the prevention of disease in banana crops, which is one of the most exploited crops in the province of Bocas del Toro.  Among the participants were the regional manager of ISA, Edmundo Caballero; the regional directors of MIDA, Luis López; of Plant Health of the International Regional Organization of Agricultural Health (OIRSA), Xavier Euceda; and of Plant Health of MIDA, Emmeris Quintero. 

Also in attendance were farmers, cooperatives and companies dedicated to the production of bananas and plantains in this region.  The experience of this initiative allowed the exchange of knowledge and the establishment of preventive models and immediate mitigation in case of the presence of Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (Foc R4T) being detected in the country.
