Radical surgery for scandal plagued UK tabloid

The News of The World, the  former money making  tabloid at the center of the British phone hacking scandal  is to be closed after a final, ad-free Sunday edition this weekend.

The announcement came from  a top official at News Corp., James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch, in a sudden statement that underscored the devastating effect of allegations that targets included not only a 13-year-old murder victim but also relatives of fallen soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan says a Thursday morning flash from the New York Times.

Advertisers were lining up to cancel their advertising contracts after the scandal erupted, and  the British Legion, representing serving and past servicemen  cut all links with the publication.
